内容简介(英文) | Wen Shu (tzu Tuan-jung) was a native of Ch’ang-chou in Kiangsu, the daughter of Wen Ts’ung-chien (great-grandson of Wen Cheng-ming). She married the scholar Chao Ling-chun (1591-1640) of Wu-chung. Clever and talented by nature, she was a gifted painter who could sketch anything she saw, but she died at the young age of 40 years. She specialized in painting flowers, and it is said that every day at home whenever she saw a strange flower or unusual grass, a small insect or rare butterfly, she would casually sketch it. Altogether there were said to be a thousand varieties which were collected into an album and given the title “Grasses, Trees, and Insects from the Wintry Mountain.” This fan painting is an example of her skill at capturing the nature of her subjects. The scene selected in very simple, sketched in with many wet brushstrokes. Dots of ink bring out the special flavor of the plum. The old trunks, new branches, and scattered blossoms seem to move in the light, possessing the three qualities traditionally associated with the plum: purity, aloofness, and seclusion. |
内容简介(英文) | Wen T’i’s name is given as Shu in Wu-sheng History of Poetry and her style name Tuan-jung in an inscription in The Han-shan Lan-kuei History of Painting. A native of Ch’ang-chou, she was the daughter of Wen Ts’ung-chien and married to Chao Ling-chun, son of Chao Huan-kuang. She inherited the family methods of painting and calligraphy and was by nature bright and intelligent. In her depictions of solitary flowers, rare plants, small insects, and unusual butterflies, she quickly applied washes of ink so as to depict all their animated character and freshness. In this album leaf stands an old plum tree with a single branch of blossoms extending out from the side. The composition is clearly defined and abbreviated, using ink that had been freely applied. The brushwork is sketchy with a spirit of archaic elegance that imparts an abundance of harmony. |
